Dropull Municipality, with the support of the European Integration Unit office, has been selected as one of 12 initiatives to receive funding from Beyond Plastic Med (BeMed) for the year 2025. Through its project, ‘Eco-Schools and Sustainable Tourism: A Plastic-Free Future for Dropull,’ the Municipality aims to reduce plastic waste by promoting sustainable practices in three key areas:

1.       Local schools,

2.       Tourist hotspots, and

3.       The broader community.

The project aims to reduce plastic waste in local schools, tourist hotspots, and the broader community. By introducing an eco-friendly curriculum, conducting workshops, and providing waste separation bins, the initiative will raise awareness and encourage students, teachers, and the community to reduce plastic consumption. In the tourism sector, Dropull Municipality is working with local businesses to eliminate single-use plastics at key cultural sites, including the Gjirokastra Pass and Byzantine churches ⛪. Community involvement is key, with clean-up campaigns 🚮, social media outreach 📱, and waste collection initiatives to engage residents and raise awareness about reducing plastic waste. This initiative will help align Dropull with national and EU environmental standards and serve as a model for other rural municipalities 🌊.

Founded in June 2015 by Prince Albert II of Monaco, BeMed addresses one of the most alarming environmental challenges, plastic pollution in the Mediterranean region.”
